Fortress lyrics

by

Oliver Gies

Up on a mount, a grey shape to behold
Clad in mist, it arises
Towers and stairs, much too steep and too bold
Try not to spy o’er its walls, be foretold
Blaze and glory are gone long

Deadly and deep, with’ring moats scar the grounds
Dare ye swim, ye will perish
Drawbridges shut, ghostly guards make their rounds
Iron gates, like a hoard of wild hounds
Chains in wind sing in anguish

Yonder the gates, ancient ways lead inside
Guiding ye to the sanctum
Armours stand lifeless in rank and in file
Torches are blazing in dusky twilight

And I stride all alone
Through the grey halls of stone
Inside my fortress
And I stride all alone
Through the grey halls of stone
Inside my fortress

Old paintings tell stories of long bygone times
In once shining hues, in reds and blues
The bridges were open, the gates they were wide
The fort, it stood noble, proud and new
The court, they were drinking and dancing along
Fair Maidens and knights, joined in spirit and song
Now I stride all alone
Through the grey halls of stone
Inside my fortress
And I stride all alone
Through the grey halls of stone
Inside my fortress

Climbing the stairs, up right up to the keep
Savage height, cruel ascension
There I can see them, in darkness so deep
Hundreds of strongholds send warnings and pleas
Silent, forsaken, I see them and weep
For I know that inside them still men go in grief

And they stride all alone
Through the grey halls of stone
Inside their fortress
And they stride all alone
Through the grey halls of stone
Inside their fortress
