User Interview: shark lyrics

dax9k: Hey shark, my fellow community colleague. Since we know each other quite well, there might be questions I already know the answer to, but act surprised like I never asked you these types of questions before for the sake of the interview. Anyways, how are you doing?

shark: Hey, dax, I just got sick, so I'm not feeling too good, but I decided to make time for this interview. I'm really curious about your questions. 👀

dax9k: Sucks to hear that (again). Hope you get well soon. Let's get to the questions and start with the most obvious one. How did you find out about Genius and what made you decide you want to contribute? I know you first contacted me in like 2022 after transcribing Ektor's "Novej den", but we've probably never talked about how you got to the website in the first place (or my goldfish memory might just be clouding my mind).

shark: Haha, I think we definitely talked about that and you just don't remember. I knew Genius years before I even thought of contributing there in any way. Before Genius, I was on a rival site where I was posting lyrics from a friend who was rapping at the time. Unfortunately the Moderator of that site deleted all my lyrics without a reason, which made me very angry, so I started looking for a possible alternative. My friend told me that we could post his lyrics on Genius, but I didn't get involved at that time. It was only after about a year, when I was looking for lyrics for Ektor's track, that I thought of signing up and editing something. Then I contacted you, we started talking etc.

dax9k: I remember I was casually going to transcribe the track hours after it was released because I was damn sure the lyrics wouldn't be there. To my surprise, the lyrics were up. I'm not going to lie, back then, I was perplexed and mad at the same time since someone broke my "transcribing monopoly", lol.

But let's fast-forward to the present. You have had a significant presence on Geniuscord lately mainly because of your shark persona. What made you embrace it completely? And why shark specifically?

shark: I was very happy to break your monopoly, dax 👿

Now let's talk about the shark! It's kind of a long story, but I'm sure a lot of people remember me as "lossthesemigod." Since I made a lot of mistakes under that moniker and didn't behave as I should in many cases, I decided to rename myself and try to start over under a different name. I had been using the shark symbol for some time when I was lossthesemigod, so the choice of name was obvious, since the name "shark" was basically available on Genius.

Anyway, the shark was used by a producer and rapper I was hanging out with around 2020. I remember he kept sending me sharks and I loved it so much I kept sending him sharks too. One of my favorite rappers started using sharks a little bit too, so I decided to kind of copy that idea and embrace the shark persona on Genius.

dax9k: You have mentioned that one of your favorite rappers started using sharks 🦈🦈. Care to uncover who that mysterious rapper is? Or in general, let's talk music. I know you are an avid rap fan, so could you maybe list some of your top rappers? And regarding the genre, was rap always your go-to? Or were you listening to any other genre growing up?

shark: Hmm, I don't have a list of like top 10 rappers, but I'll at least write some names here to give people an idea. I mainly listen to American rap, especially Toronto, Memphis, Atlanta and Chicago. My favorite rappers are Future, BONES, SosMula, Redda, Fenix Darko, Casper TNG. I also like 42 Dugg, Rio Da Yung OG, Lil Durk and DracBaby, who Juroes introduced me to.

Rap has always been my favorite genre. When I was a kid there was all sorts of music playing, but since I was about 12 I've only listened to rap. I listen to almost all genres of rap, but mostly Supertrap, New Jazz, Trap Metal, Rage and Trap in general (The mysterious rapper is SosMula btw).

dax9k: I see that you have grown fond of supertrap ever since I introduced you to the genre because I see you mentioning artists such as Redda and Fenix Darko. This is underscored by the fact that you started the Supertrap Genius project. Can you give us some insight into that? Or into any other project that you are involved in right now?
shark: Since you brought me to Supertrap, I have come into contact with many people, including the founders of Supertrap themselves, Grim Brxzy and DX, who have warmly welcomed me into their community, which I appreciate immensely. The Supertrap Genius project came about because I was unable to remember producer tags + I wanted to have information about the subgenre in one place, as it wasn't available anywhere else.

In the future I want to do more with Supertrap Genius and also try to revive Genius Drill together with @opp, because I think it's a useful project for people that are interested in Drill rappers like me.

dax9k: Great, I'll keep an eye out. And finally, a topic that comes up quite often in our conversations, and that is albums. Could you name your favorite international and also Czech albums for 2024? What announced albums are you looking forward to?

shark: Sure, my favorite international albums this year are WE DON'T TRUST YOU by Future and Metro, SLEEZ RELIGION by SosMula, The Death Of Slim Shady by Eminem, SPEAK NOW by Moneybagg Yo.

From Czech Republic I liked TRIUMPH by CHRI$$$TO and CANCEL CULTURE MUSICK by Pyraboyz.

This year was really weak, I didn't like almost anything tbh. Last year was much better.

dax9k: Nice, couldn't agree more with the last sentence. CANCEL CULTURE MUSICK is certainly a good pick, I enjoyed the hell out of it.

Thank you for your time, bro, and keep up the good work on the site. Do you have anything else to add?

shark: Just want to give an S/O to all the Genius people who are tapped in the game. S/O @dax9k, @mat, @WriteNProppa, @JuroesAKAGeniusGod, @yessirre, @opp, @JicS1401. Keep killin’ it!

dax9k: That's it then, good night (I know you are going to sleep after this).
