The Lost lyrics
by Rosemary Dobson
Lost, what most I long for,
And never to be found,
Between the lake water and the sea water
I walk without a sound.
Between darkness and the blaze of morning
Over the hot sand,
I search for the lost and longed-for, thinking --
This will be the time:
Neither in dark nor in day will I find what I search for
But in the time between
When the light lies like a breath on a mirror
Over the lake and the sea.
Possessed in stillness, waiting, hoping for intimation
That this is holy ground,
Between the lake water and the sea water
I walk on the sand.
And return again at evening, thinking --
This, too, is a time between,
The lake a shell in the brown palm of the hills, shining
With a nacreous gleam.
And I cry, as I cried at morning --
Child, return.
And await the miraculous intervention,
The impossible, never-to-be-given sign.
